Sobering Facts about Industrial Safety
Some sobering facts about Industrial Safety :
1. In the USA. On average, one person every three days dies due to incidents involving just one type of mobile equipment – the forklift.
2. A workplace fatality costs between 2 million and 5 million dollars, depending upon the circumstances of the incident.
3. Most accidents involving forklifts are the direct result of the machine operator, not realizing that another worker is in the area.
Forklift Safety Tip: Carrying the load safely
- Carry load as low as possible.
- Drive with load against the load backrest with the mast tilted back.
- Move only when you are sure the load is stable.
- Operate the forklift in reverse if the load obstructs your view.
Forklift Safe Driving Tips
- Use a seatbelt if one is provided.
- Watch for overhead obstructions.
- Drive at a speed that is safe for driving surface, workplace and load conditions.
- Back down all grades when loaded.
- Avoid turning on ramps or inclines.
- Maintain a safe distance from the edge of ramps, docks and loading platforms.
Safe use of forklifts around other workers
- Slowdown and sound the horn when vision is obstructed.
- Stop when anyone crosses the route being traveled. Lower your load to the ground and wait until clear.
- Do not raise or lower forks while forklift is moving.
- Drive at a speed that permits safe stopping
- Look toward the travel path and keep a clear view.
